This idea came from the ability for an object to move in any direction regardless of the size of the object using 2 sets of rollers placed perpendicular about each other, surrounding one set of the wheels. This is illustrated in this video
Now if we could minimize this mechanism into a small spherical object, not only would the sphere be about move in any direction with ease, but also it would be able to do it with precision and be able to climb over obstacles or itself.
In addition, these sphere would be programmable and be made of material that enhances the magnetic field it would set up to attract neighbouring sphere into the correct orientation. Since, it is programmable; the numbers of configurations are numerous and are only limited by the imagination of the user.
The method of forming a configuration is similar to how without knowledge of its surroundings the iron-filling are able to form a perfect configuration around a bar of magnet. Using that same principle, many nano-bots (particles) would be able to come together and form any configuration.
The position of each particle is calculated with respect to the first particle. Hence, when the particles leave the jar they start taking a number. The software in the computer would map the configuration of the user to the shape of the particle and starts to number the virtual particles accordingly. Once, the computer has computed the required information, it just tells each individual particle who the neighbours are and at which angle to themselves are they. Finally, each particle runs around searching for its neighbours and uses magnetic fields of attractions and repulsion to position in the correct orientated about each other till the required configuration is met. Since, all the particles are doing this simultaneously, the configuration is done quickly and the bonds are formed strongly since magnetic field strengthens when more and more magnets align themselves in the same axis and the metal body helps confines the fields within the configuration to have minimal interference with the outside world and maintains the field even with the magnetic field turned off through the principle of magnetism. So, all a user needs is a computer (to programme the particles), a transmitter (translates the high-end language into machine language which the particle would understand) and a jar of particles.
